A wonderful annual musical event in Paris
La Fête de la Musique was launched to celebrate the summer solstice. The idea was the brainchild of the famous French composer, music journalist, and radio producer, Maurice Fleuret.
Shortly after seeing the results of a “cultural habits” study showing that five million people (one child out of two), played a musical instrument, he began to consider the idea of creating a stage on the streets for musical talent. This dream became a reality with the birth of a one-day street music festival in 1982.
Since then, France has celebrated the first day of summer – the solstice, with a musical extravaganza for all the family.
Like a fine wine, the event has improved with age. Now in its 26th year, singers, bands, musicians and artists from every corner of the country display their talents on the streets, outside cafes, bars and restaurants or wherever they can find a space and a plug socket for their amp! All in an effort to entertain passers-by.
The standard and quality of the music is so superb that people struggle to keep walking and end up stopping, having a drink and grooving to the varied genres of music on offer. Mums, dads, children even pets are shaking there thang! It’s a lot of fun.
The festivities go on until late into the night and you can have a great evening out by just meandering through the streets whilst discovering new music en route! If you want to make the most of it, it’s probably worth booking a restaurant in advance and on a terrace, to ensure you get a ringside seat at the concert of your choice. Luckily you have a broad range of music to choose from rock & reggae to soul & pop, it’s all out there for your entertainment.
So if you haven’t already done so, keep tonight free because you will definitely be guaranteed a great night out when Paris celebrates the summer with La Fête de la Musique on June 21st 2019.
